The number of homeowners who install smart devices in their homes is set to swell as more “Internet of Things” technologies like smart thermostats and furniture hit the market.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) expects unit sales of such devices to reach 20.7 million in 2014, with that number jumping to 35.9 million by 2017.

Thirteen percent of broadband households already own at least one smart-home gadget, according to a survey released by the trade group in October.

Consumers are keen on smart lights and smart thermostats, while smart door locks, smoke detectors and garage door openers are popular gifts, the survey found.

Each of the startups that presented is enrolled in Microsoft’s home automation accelerator. Microsoft’s breakdown of these products and services offer a glimpse into devices you’re likely to find in tomorrow’s homes.
